What moves a detailing quote?
- Vehicle size. Many local detailers price sedans, SUVs and trucks separately. A crew cab truck or a 3-row SUV takes longer inside and out.
- Condition. A car that’s been sitting, has pet hair everywhere or red clay ground into the carpet takes more time. Most published prices say “starting at” for this reason.
- What’s included. One shop’s “full detail” is a vacuum and wipe-down; another’s includes seat shampoo, a clay bar and a sealant. Compare the lists, not the names.
- Protection. A spray sealant lasts months. A ceramic coating lasts much longer and needs paint prep first, which is most of its price.
- Add-ons. Pet hair, odor, engine bay and trim work add $20 to $50 each at most shops around here.
How do you compare two quotes?
Line the two packages up item by item. Ask:
- Is the interior shampooed or extracted, or just vacuumed and wiped?
- Is there a clay bar on the paint, and what protection goes on after: wax, sealant or coating?
- Are the wheels, tires and fender wells included?
- Does the price change for an SUV or truck?
- For mobile service: do they bring their own water and power, or do they need your hose and outlet?
The cheaper quote often skips a step. The pricier one sometimes includes something you don’t need. Both are fine, as long as you know which you’re getting.
Why do the same packages cost different amounts?
Two detailers can both call a package a “full detail” and charge $100 apart. Usually the difference is time on the car. A higher price often pays for a seat shampoo or hot water extraction, leather conditioning, a clay bar, or a longer-lasting sealant. A lower one may be a vacuum, a wipe-down and a hand wash, which is plenty for a car that’s kept up.
Prices also move with the season. Spring pollen and summer road trips keep local calendars full, so it pays to book a week or two ahead in April and May.
Is mobile detailing more expensive than a shop?
Not around Jefferson. Most of the detailers whose prices appear above are mobile, and their prices sit in the same range shops charge. What you save is time: no drop-off, no ride back, no waiting room. If you’re weighing a detail against a car wash, our post on mobile detailing vs. a car wash breaks down what each one cleans.
